This Privacy Policy explains how Karatu, developed by Dexino Cloud & AI Solutions, handles information when you use the application.

1. Documents and files

Karatu allows users to open or import supported reading content such as PDF and EPUB documents and associated media.

Documents selected by the user are used to provide the requested reading, text extraction, narration, display or playback functionality.

Under the current local-first design, complete documents are not intentionally uploaded to Dexino servers as part of normal reading functionality.

Dexino does not claim ownership of documents, books or other content that users choose to open or import into Karatu.

2. File access

Karatu may request access to files, images or media selected by the user. Access is used to open, display, organise, read, play or manage the selected content.

Karatu does not use file permissions for the purpose of searching for unrelated personal documents.

3. Reading and playback progress

Karatu may store information locally on the user's device, including reading position, audiobook playback position, recently opened material, book-cover selections, application preferences and related library information.

This information is used to allow users to continue from where they previously stopped and to maintain their local Karatu library.

4. Audio and background playback

Karatu may use Android media playback services to support audiobook playback, background audio, automatic progression between tracks, media controls and compatible vehicle or audio interfaces.

Playback may temporarily pause, reduce volume or otherwise respond to navigation instructions, telephone calls or other system audio events.

5. Text-to-speech

Where text-to-speech functionality is available, text from a document may be processed by the selected speech engine for the purpose of reading content aloud.

The privacy behaviour of an external, device-based or operating-system text-to-speech engine may be governed by the provider of that service.

6. Online book-cover lookup

Karatu may allow users to search for book-cover artwork using online book information services.

When a user chooses this feature, search information such as a book title, author name, ISBN or other search terms entered by the user may be sent to services such as Google Books or Open Library in order to find relevant book information or cover images.

If the user selects an online cover, the selected image may be downloaded and stored on the user's device for use within Karatu.

Karatu does not intentionally send the complete contents of the user's PDF or EPUB document to these services for the purpose of cover lookup.

7. Accounts and personal information

Karatu does not require users to create a Dexino account to use its core local reading features.

Dexino does not use Karatu to directly collect users' names, contact lists, personal messages or complete copies of their documents as part of normal local reading functionality.

8. Advertising, Google Play and purchases

Karatu may display advertisements using Google Mobile Ads or related Google advertising services.

Advertising services may process information such as IP address, general device information, application interactions, diagnostic information and device or advertising identifiers for purposes such as advertising, analytics, security and fraud prevention.

The exact information processed may depend on the user's device, Android version, advertising settings, applicable legal requirements and the configuration of the advertising service.

Karatu may offer an optional purchase to remove advertisements. Purchases are processed through Google Play Billing.

Dexino does not directly receive or store users' complete payment-card details. Payment processing and purchase-account information are handled by Google Play according to Google's policies and the user's Google account settings.

9. Third-party services

Karatu may use or interact with third-party services for application distribution, security, billing, advertising, book information, updates, media functionality or features explicitly selected by the user.

These third-party services may process information according to their own privacy policies and terms.

Karatu's use of a third-party service does not give Dexino control over that service's independent privacy practices.

10. Data sharing

Dexino does not sell users' personal information, documents or reading history.

Complete document files are not intentionally shared with third parties by Dexino unless the user explicitly invokes a feature that requires an external service or chooses to share content.

Certain technical information may nevertheless be processed by third-party platform, advertising, billing or online information services where those services are used as described in this Policy.

11. Data security

Users remain responsible for protecting access to their device, Google account and documents stored on the device.

Dexino uses reasonable technical measures intended to minimise unnecessary collection or transfer of users' reading material.

No electronic storage, software system or network transmission can be guaranteed to be completely secure.

12. User content and lawful use

Users remain responsible for ensuring that they have the necessary rights, permissions or other lawful basis to access and use content with Karatu.

Dexino does not encourage or support the use of unlawfully obtained, infringing or otherwise illegal materials.

Karatu is intended to be used with documents, books and other content that the user is legally entitled to access and process.

13. Changes to this Privacy Policy

This Privacy Policy may be updated when Karatu's functionality, third-party services, legal requirements or data practices change.

The date shown below will be updated when material changes are made. Users are encouraged to review this page periodically.
