This Privacy Policy explains how Karatu, developed by Dexino Cloud & AI Solutions, handles information when you use the application.

1. Documents and files

Karatu allows users to open or import supported reading content such as PDF and EPUB documents and associated media.

Documents selected by the user are used only to provide the requested reading or playback functionality.

Under the current local-first design, documents are not intentionally uploaded to Dexino servers as part of normal reading functionality.

2. File access

Karatu may request access to files or media selected by the user. Access is used to open, display, organise or play the selected content.

Karatu does not use file permissions to search for unrelated personal documents.

3. Reading and playback progress

The application may store information locally such as reading position, audiobook playback position, recently opened material and application preferences.

This allows users to continue from where they previously stopped.

4. Audio and Android Auto

Karatu may use Android media playback services to support audiobook playback, background audio, automatic progression between tracks and compatible vehicle interfaces such as Android Auto.

Playback may temporarily pause or reduce volume in response to navigation instructions, calls or other system audio events.

5. Text-to-speech

Where text-to-speech functionality is available, text from a document may be processed by the selected speech engine for the purpose of reading content aloud.

The privacy behaviour of an external or operating-system text-to-speech engine may be governed by the provider of that service.

6. Accounts and personal information

Karatu does not require users to create a Dexino account to use its core local reading features.

Dexino does not use the app to directly collect users' names, contact lists, personal messages or complete copies of their documents as part of normal local reading functionality.

7. Third-party services

Karatu may use Google Play and Android platform services for distribution, security, updates, billing or compatible media functionality.

8. Data sharing

Dexino does not sell users' personal information, documents or reading history.

Files are not intentionally shared with third parties by Dexino unless a user explicitly invokes a sharing feature or an external service is required for a feature selected by the user.

9. Data security

Users remain responsible for protecting access to their device and the documents stored on it.

Dexino uses reasonable technical measures intended to minimise unnecessary collection or transfer of users' reading material.

10. Changes to this Privacy Policy

This policy may be updated if Karatu later introduces cloud synchronisation, accounts, advertising, online text processing or other functionality that changes its data practices.
